The Maria Luisa Park in Seville

The Maria Luisa Park is the largest one in Seville, and it owes its name to Princess María Luisa Fernanda de Orleans, who ceded it to the city in 1893. Beside the main entrance there is the San Telmo Palace, headquarters of the President of the Board of Andalusia, and the Tobacco Factory which is now the headquarters of the University. In addition to several acres of land, plants, trees, fountains, ponds and a wide variety of wildlife there are many tourist attractions in the park. This is the case of the famous América Square, which is home to the two most important museums of Seville: The Museum of Arts and Popular Customs and the Archaeological Museum. These museums house the main archaeological collections of the city. The most important expositions include Roman mosaics and valuable Italic artefacts, with a unique Phoenician statuette: Tanit-Astarte, the virgin goddess which once was adored throughout the whole Mediterranean.

One of the main entrances of the Maria Luisa park is the beautiful Spain Square that was built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. If you so wish, you can visit the park in a horse drawn carriage. You can access Plaza España through the beautiful Isabel la Católica Avenue that goes directly to the park.

The Plaza España occupies a semicircle of about 200 metres in diameter. Its main attraction is probably its ceramic mosaics representing important allegories, with coats of arms for each Spanish province and a map on the floor. A semicircular canal surrounded by a railing gives the square a very special and romantic aspect. Because of that Seville is known as the Venice of Andalusia. Right in the middle there is a fountain, designed by Vicente Traver, which at night is illuminated by a thousand lights.

This majestic park of great cultural value has a wide variety of vegetation. It has ducks, geese and turkeys. It also has a large area of gardens and boulevards full of palm trees, orange trees, elms and Mediterranean pines, many different types of flowers, ponds and pavilions. Many experts consider it the most beautiful park, not only in Spain but throughout Europe.
