Lying: We all do it.

Posted by seville | seville | Thursday 24 February 2011 10:47 am

As living beings, we are united – as one family, one humanity, we need one another like we need the air that we breathe. Some relate to others more, but regardless of a person’s behaviour, he is more or less the same as the rest of society. And in a liar society, a vast majority are liars.

lies

The politician lies in his speech full of promises, the salesman lies about his bad merchandise, the businessman lies to get rich, at the cost of his employees, the doctor lies by prescribing medicines to the pharmaceutical giants, the sportsman lies about taking steroids, publicists sell untruthful films, governments lie by inventing wars which will only benefit themselves, and use up the worlds natural resources, religious leaders preach one thing, and do another… Is there is anybody who doesn’t lie? Obviously there also is the sacred lie - the one used to do good, to live better, to bring justice, to save lives.

All societies, in the history of the human race, have been founded on lies, crimes, injustice, and traitors – but since we all lie, we must ask ourselves, What type of liar am I? Because in the end, we are only lying to ourselves. Here’s an idea: we have to start by changing ourselves. Detect what our lies are, in what ways we are deceiving others, how we present ourselves, how we act, and who we are taking advantage of. If we want others to be honest with us, we have to start by being honest with ourselves. If you live by the following phrase: “I can’t change society, but I can change myself” you will be living in society as an individual.

Witchcraft is now legal profession in Romania

Posted by seville | seville | Wednesday 23 February 2011 10:36 am

Earlier this year the witchcraft was decreed legal profession in Romania. That means that from now on, the witches have to pay income tax of 16% as any Romanian citizen too. With this change in labor law, the government wants to avoid increasing tax evasion, a growing phenomenon in this country in crisis.

witchcraft

However, politicians do not seem to be aware of the consequences that this new law could lead not only to the country in general, but also for themselves: they will have to face the fury of the witches with their spells and potions. So not surprisingly, a witch named Bratan has vowed revenge, threatening to cast a spell on all politicians involved in this new law, while others used cat litter to cast spells on the president. Their anger is because most earn so little money that the new tax law will remove a significant portion of their profits. Many, however, think that the witches make their money by deceiving people, and therefore are in favor of the new law.

Witchcraft, now an official profession, is very common in Romania, especially in rural areas, and occultism is on the agenda in this country made famous by the legend of Count Dracula and Transylvania. A country where even politicians wear in purple every Thursday to ward off demons.

Andrea Blum gives life to Jerzy Grotowski in Seville

Posted by seville | seville | Friday 18 February 2011 10:38 am

Until March 20 the Andalusian Center of Contemporary Art will exhibit the work of New York artist Andrea Blum, on the Polish theater director Jerzy Grotowski. The work is a sculptural devicen on which an audiovisual cycle Grotowski’s theater and his thought about the theatrical representation is projected.

andrea blum grotowski

Andrea Blum was born in New York and studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her artwork is known in France, England and the Netherlands as well as in major U.S. galleries.

The theater director Jerzy Grotowski was born in Rzeszow, Poland, in 1933 and studied in Krakow and Moscow. In his beginnings as a theater director and theorist he founded the Theatre of 13 Rows, which he directed until 1964. The following year he began to make free adaptations of classical theater and changed the name of the company’s Laboratory Theatre. Among his early theatrical adaptations there was the work of Calderon de la Barca, The Constant Prince. This experience was made until 1976 and began teaching experimental theater in the world.

His biggest contribution to cutting-edge contemporary drama was developing his theory about the essence of theater, where actors must be stripped of all artifice and adhesions that can divert the staging of their true nature, what he called the Poor Theatre. Grotowski explores in the figure of the actor, the core strength of the work, arguing that the elimination of all ornament, decor, costumes, and makeup forced the viewer to concentrate on acting work.

To achieve the perfection of the actors, he subjected them to intense physical work days whose aim was psychophysical training and achieving a perfect balance between mind and body plastic. All this training was developed for the actor to be open to the creation, since he rejected the subordination to the texts as the basis of theatrical creation. His avant-garde in the arts classic stage changed roles between the audience and actors, increasing the possibility of participation of the audience.

Theories of interpretation and actin of Grotowski drafted, from the techniques of Konstantin Stanislavski and Artau’s psychophysical work, are the basic principles of theatre as art rather than as a commercial space.

In 1980 he returned to directing theater to mount the work of The Tree People presented in Italy. The following year he returned to his native Poland and began The Theater of Origins, an anthropological production that toured various countries. He died in 1999 in Italy.

His theatrical work and theories have influenced contemporary actors and directors as Alejandro Jodorowsky and Peter Brook among others. The latter made the introduction to his theoretical writings, Towards a Poor Theatre.

Health Myths: Stop Worrying

Posted by seville | seville | Tuesday 15 February 2011 10:33 am

These days, there’s so much contradictory information about our health that it’s impossible to know what to believe. Every day we are bombarded with new health dangers, adding to our list of neuroses, and bottles of new vitamin pills which end up forgotten in the dark depths of the medicine cabinet.

health myhts

The classic ones are tobacco, alcohol and stress… but also on the list of dangers are some of the most delicious foods, making the task of being responsible and looking after ourselves a difficult one. However, there are some myths of health “dos” and “don’ts” that we would like to de-bunk, so that you can relax a bit.

- Drink 8 glasses of water a day. This is one of the hardest pieces of advice to follow. But don’t worry – any type of liquid keeps us hydrated – even the dreaded coffee.

- If you are stressed, you’ll get grey hair. Another one of those myths that has never actually been scientifically proved.

- Coffee is bad for your health. Whilst too much coffee speeds you up, and won’t do you any good, one or two cups a day never killed anyone. Coffee comes from plants, and contains anti-oxidants and various other good things that we can’t pronounce.

- Eggs increase our cholesteral. Definitely one of the oldest health myths. However, recent studies have shown that its actually saturated fats and trans fats are the true dangers to our health.

How relieving a hangover

Posted by seville | seville | Monday 7 February 2011 11:02 am

Here we go with another research of the British, this time it’s a group of doctors at the University of Exeter, (Exeter, the capital city of the county of Devon, is one of the oldest cities in Britain, located in the heart of West of England, an area famous for its mild climate and natural beauty, is a mixture of antiquity and modernity with Roman walls, a Norman cathedral and modern facilities. Wikipedia).

relieving hangover

Well, at this university, they have dismantled the nature of the alcoholic hangover remedies that exist to combat it. This is a very serious study; to start, it sets its boundaries with an honesty that discourages anyone in search of the magic potion that ends with the dreaded hangover. Scholars say, “You do not really know what the mechanisms of the hangover are. We know it has to do with the toxic effects of alcohol and dehydration, but we do not know how it works”.

This study has, as I said, its limits, but on the other hand, we must say that the doctors in their parties, they mix their drinks with serum to combat pediatric hangover in advance, so that it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that these scholars are withholding relevant information regarding the hangover and its antidotes, although in the Medical Journal in they state: “There is no evidence that there is a remedy to treat or prevent a hangover”.

Along with this pessimistic information, they add a classic series of remedies: a couple of aspirins with plenty of water before going to bed (if you have not previously fallen asleep at a bar or directly on the floor), eating bananas, chewing cabbage, eating eggs for breakfast, exercising, drinking green tea or a milk shake. This is how a long list continues, as well as some pharmaceutical drugs such as Nux Vomica, homeopathic medicine that, according to their most ardent supporters, is miraculous, as much as the frank vomiting which if applied in time, drastically reduces the devastating effects of a hangover.

It seems all we can do with hangover is to slightly reduce its effects and to theorize about it, because if there were a remedy that would fix it completely, then the vital balance of pleasure and displeasure would be broken; drinking would not probably be the same without that introspective and reflective period that a hangover gives us, people would drink without dizziness, without the stimulus of fearing the abyss.

There is a web page (www.hungover.com) where, without so much medical itching, suggests a top 7 anti-hangover: sleeping, having sex for blood to circulate and re-hydrate your body, drinking plenty of water, taking a long bath; eating a chocolate bar to give KO to hangover with a stroke of sugar, a soda drink or a moisturizer such Aquarius or coffee. I would add my personal choice, which requires no medical support and it comes to fighting a hangover by becoming in the remedy itself: stop excessive drinking, and if what you try is precisely exceeding, do not forget ordering one or two dishes of cabbage.
