It is no surprise that the April Fair is considered to be one of the most famous and biggest celebrations in the world, holding the second place after the prestigious Oktoberfest in Germany. If you are in the mood for the fascinating world of flamenco and want to get lost in an extraordinary atmosphere, you should travel to the South of Spain in April. Festivities will start with the famous ‘Alumbrao’ (‘Lighting’), where at midnight millions of coloured paper lanterns are lit.
During this exceptional week, more than 1,5 million visitors –foreigners and Spanish tourists- crowd the fairground in the ‘Los Remedios’ district. The place itself is a real show: organizers and involved volunteers display, as usual, their incredible creativity regarding decoration. Hundreds of colourful ‘casetas’ (sort of stands), countless food and drinks stands, amazing bullfights, traditional dances, typical carriages, carousels, tasty Mediterranean food, delicious wine, folk costumes and, above all, Sevillians in good spirits, welcoming all visitors warm-heartedly. During these days, they devote themselves to your well-being. You will not be hungry or thirsty and don’t even think for a second that you could start being bored because it’s impossible. Let it flow, enjoy life, leave your problems aside and get ready to find out about a charming and open culture.

The origins
Now, let’s talk about a little bit of history. The April Fair was priginally invented by two men. In 1846, Catalan Narciso Bonaplata and Basque José María de Ybarra asked the Mayor for permission to organize an annual fair in Seville. As you can see, the aim to reunite people and enjoy life has been accomplished down to a T.

Spring is here! Now put a big smile on your face and reserve your trip to the special occasion in the Andalusian city of Seville. The Holy Week in Seville, a unique experience

Posted by seville | seville | Tuesday 23 March 2010 1:11 pm

The Holy Week is lived and enjoyed fervently and passionately in several Spanish cities, and most of these celebrations are considered as an event of International Tourist Interest, but if a radar or satellite from space could detect the hottest point with more hubbub and devotion for this festivity, this would be, without a question, Seville.

The city arguably holds the most elaborate procession for a Holy Week anywhere in the world. Living the Holy Week is more than a religious feeling. It is a spectacle in itself. During this week, the city is crowded with residents and visitors, drawn in by the atmosphere. The processions are organised by hermandades and cofradías, (religious brotherhoods), which work very hard during the year in order to carefully prepare even the most insignificant detail. The worst and saddest thing for a brotherhood is when they are not able to follow the scheduled route from their home churches and chapels to the Cathedral, due to the weather.

Most important days
I don’t want you to get tiresome with specific terms -Holy Week has a comprehensive and complicated vocabulary, not suitable for beginners-, so let’s talk about the most important dates. This year, the traditional event starts on March 28th, Palm Sunday, and ends on April 4th, Easter Sunday. The climax of the week is Holy Thursday, the day when Jesus had the Last Supper with his Apostles, followed by the beginning of his passion, the Madrugá, when the most popular processions set out to arrive at the Cathedral on the dawn of Good Friday (Jesus’ crucifixion, performed in 14 stations) and as a culmination, Easter Sunday, the resurrection of Jesus.

The sweetest side
During Holy Week a number of mouth-watering desserts are served in cake shops and convents. Please, trust me and taste these delicious foods, like arroz con leche, (rice pudding), the famous torrijas (similar to French toasts), pestiños, chocolate nazareños, rosquitos, almond cookies…
To live the Sevillian Holy Week will surely turn into an unforgettable experience. And remember, you must reserve your accommodation in advance! Book Apartments in Seville right now!

Imagine travelling 3186 kilometres in three days on board of a luxury coach, seeing huge colourful landscapes and mountains, from Paris to Istanbul. Travel on the Orient Express is a unique, romantic and unforgettable experience for your eyes. We invite you to change the airplane for the train to discover Europe in a new magical way. This experience is nothing like anything else you might have done.

A very special evasion
In its origins in 1883, the most famous train of the world travelled from Paris to Romania, passing through Strasbourg, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest. When they built the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, the train became known as the Venice Simplon Orient Express, and over the time it has been adding new routes: from London, Venice, Prague or Paris. This is a two to six day trip aboard one of the trains 17 wagons that are set in the 1920s style.

The Orient-Express has a long history and reputation: with its sofa-bed, a piano-bar car, and its delicious French cuisine, the luxury is assured: Agatha Christie, Paul Valéry, Guillaume Apollinaire and other celebrities and politicians have travelled or have been inspired on board this train. It also has butlers and its restaurant has an exquisite French menu! But the most luxurious of all lies in the magic of being in constant movement across the European territory, writing, listening to music, meeting people. It has a unique charm!

Travelling in train across Europe
If you fancy a train journey, note that Europe has many more trains and routes: the Trans-Siberian, linking Vladivostok (a city which means “power on East”) with Mongolia since 1904. It is the longest train journey in the world (8 days) and crosses seven different time zones.

The Trans-Cantábrico Train will take you across northern Spain from San Sebastián or León to Santiago de Compostela while overlooking the Biscay Bay. This train also has excellent Mediterranean food on board. If you want an overview of southern Spain ride on the Al Andalus Train and stop off in Seville. To find the best accommodation in the city rent apartments in Seville and enjoy your stay.

The Big Bang – How the Orgasm Evolved

Posted by seville | seville | Wednesday 3 March 2010 1:55 pm

Everyone knows that the only way to keep the species going, outside of the lab, is sex. But why is it built to feel good? Orgasm (male or female) has nothing to do with sperm-meeting-egg, and although there are plenty of theories on why it exists, the truth is that no-one really knows how it came about (no pun intended).

big-bang-orgasm

We don’t even really know if we are the only species on the planet that experiences it – although there is plenty of evidence to suggest that our closest primate relatives also have orgasms, or at least really like the sex act. Having sex for fun (instead of just reproduction) is also common in dolphins, pigs, and probably cats.

This is just speculation though. An orgasm is hard to identify in another species – or even in our own. After all, how many people really know when their partner is faking it. Knowing if someone has had one often comes down to taking their word for it – and its hard to get the nod from a Bonobo ape, a lab rat, or a dolphin.

The weird thing is that most scientists have focused on finding out the reasons for the female orgasm, instead of the human orgasm. There are two things wrong with this: The first is the assumption that a man needs to orgasm to ejaculate. Anyone who has studied Tantra (and Tantric sex) knows that they are different processes – and that a man can climax repeatedly before ejaculating. Multiple orgasms, anyone? The second is a bit political: Why would we assume that pleasure is a biological necessity for a man and not for a woman, who (reproductively speaking) only needs to ‘lie back and catch sperm’ in order to become pregnant?

That second problem actually turns out to be scientifically inaccurate too: When a woman orgasms, the mouth of her cervix dips and lifts. This looks a bit like a bird drinking water. Yep, her cervix is Up-Sucking (that really is the scientific name for it) to pull sperm into the uterus and fallopian tubes. This increases the rate of fertilisation by up to 30%. In other words, women who orgasm are better breeders.

If the orgasm is, as some people suggest, Natures Happy Accident, it makes sense that it caught on fast. If Darwin was right with the whole Survival of the Fittest thing, then members of a species who are able to experience orgasm were probably looking for a whole lot more sex than their non-climaxing peers. And they were probably doing it with a lot more partners.

Humans may frown on promiscuity, but Mother Nature loves it. By mating with multiple partners, there is a stronger chance of more babies being born, that have a wide genetic diversity, which gives a species its best chance of survival.

In other words, the orgasm may be nature’s way of encouraging us to have more sex. Considering that orgasm can cure insomnia, make you look younger, increase your fertility and make you look younger, it could also be called the Fountain of Youth. And that pun is intended!

Good sex often needs a little privacy, and perhaps some romance. Take your partner away somewhere different for a few days – renting apartments in Seville is the perfect way to show them you care, and get them alone for some quality time.

South Pop Festival 2010 – the best independent music comes to Seville

Posted by seville | seville | Monday 1 March 2010 11:20 am

Winter at last, seems to be taking its last breaths and making way for a much yearned spring, the season of flowers… and of the music festivals! So the spring brings much more than a good time: it also opens the longed music festival season, which will not end until the end of the summer. After many months of musical drought, people are hungry for concerts and endless hours of fun. The South Pop Seville Festival inaugurates the year to the sound of the best indie bands, are you going to lose it?

South Pop Festival

After considering many names, the line-up has been definitely closed. Seville will hold its sixth edition of this Independent Music festival the next 26th and 27th of March between the Alameda Theatre as its main stage and the Sala Malandar and the Sala Obbio as the secondary ones.

This year the festival promoters have tried to update its image, trying to pursue a more funny line and away from a corseted vision of the music. This way, they have moved away from the habitual introspective pop and folk music to which we are so accustomed.

This year it is necessary to emphasize the participation of the Canadian band The Hidden Cameras and the Franco-German electronic pop duet Stereo Total. But there’s much more! Exonvaldes, Zombie-Zombie (see photo) , Lacrosse, and a repeater Nito Niko, will delight us with their best musical chords. Another great invited artists are François & The Atlas Mountains, Sr. Chinarro, Los Punsetes and Nudozurdo, with the best Spanish music.

At the same time of the concerts, the South Pop Seville (there is also a South Pop Festival in Huelva) will offer a great range of activities: DJs sessions after the concerts (with Linda Mirada, among others), presentation parties (Dent May, on March 19 in Malandar); Charades and Antonna (on March 25 in the same room) and closing concerts (Southern Arts Society, on March 28 in Obbio, the space where after parties will be held).

Seville awaits you with its magical nights filled with music. Come to the Andalusian capital for the festivals season! And to find the perfect accommodation at an economical price, rent the best Apartments in Seville and enjoy everything else.
