Chen Wenling and his Anticapitalist Sculpture

Posted by seville | seville | Thursday 25 February 2010 11:52 am

Today we will talk about the financial crisis, about the consumerism and about the materialism, but in a very peculiar way. Specifically, from the point of view of Mr. Chen Wenling, a magnificent avant-garde sculptor born in Fujian (China) in 1969.

Chen Wenling

This ironic artist uses Western references in his sculptures. The red colour is also very important in his works. As for example in Red Memory. One of the most impressive is the series “cool”, meaning cold.

One of his works is called “God of Materialism”, a fibreglass painted sculpture.
The pig appears in almost all of his works. You could say that it is the quintessential signature of Chen Wenling. He uses the pig as a representation of greed and everything that is mundane. It is very interesting because the pig is very special in China. Chinese people eat pig in their meals and he uses it as a metaphor of greed and selfishness.

Another impressive work is about capitalism. He calls it “What we see is not always true”. Here he replaces the pig for a bull. We can see this animal (which represents Wall Street) rising from the floor with the force of his own fart and crushed against a wall. It is assumed that it emulates one of the biggest crooks in the history, Benard Madoff, with devil horns included, who is currently in prison. The scam is valued at 50,000 million dollars.

With this exhibition he wants to express the hard moments of this financial crisis. He really wants to portray the reflection of the world in which we live in. And he does it in a large scale, to draw the maximum attention to all of us and to make us think of what is happening around us.

With his tradition of bulls and pigs, Chen Wenling exhibited his works in Spain (Seville), mostly at the Contemporary Art Museum, where he joined his iconography, in this case the bull with his political views against the capitalism. Seville, the Andalusian capital, is part of the capitalist Europe. If you want to know the city, rent Apartments in Seville and take a look at his work around the wonderful streets and iconography of Seville, where capitalism and tradition come together through the art.

Use Once and Throw Away Society

Posted by seville | seville | Friday 19 February 2010 11:14 am

Now that the sales are over and everyone is tired of buying stuff like crazy, it might be just the time for a little reflection and introspection.

throw away society

The things that we buy do not last, so every time we have to buy more, to replace the things that are already not usable. The question is whether this cycle is a habit that is taking roots in our society or is it just the product of an attitude. An attitude which assumes that by buying something cheaper or easier to achieve it will be better in a long term. To which the answer is clearly negative. This century, the century of the neon lights, is manufacturing more than necessary and generating more waste than it should. It is governed by the use once and throws away philosophy. But not only supplies last less, but also relationships, jobs, the rents, the friendships…

If before couples lasted an eternity, why is it so difficult now to find couples that overcome adversities together? It’s absurd to think that before people did better choices, especially because they had fewer options to meet so many people every weekend. Why do we so easily discard anything that seems useless when we want it?

It’s not that now everything is worse than before. This is just a mentality that should arise beyond the economic crisis and the ecological problems.

We want everything fast, perfect and for right now. We are creating a whimsical world. We grew in the abundance; we have not lived any war, either hunger… We are eternal adolescents who expect an answer from outside; we always look to the others and compare us with them, we do not value what we have because we can change it to something “better.” But this produces an eternal frustration. We think everybody is our enemy, instead of thinking we are all similar.

Enjoy the company of your friends with all their qualities and defects sharing special moments in the mot authentic Spain. Rent apartments in Seville, where the neon lights will not blind you.

After Sex

Posted by seville | seville | Wednesday 17 February 2010 1:01 pm

Foreplay, sex, orgasm and…well…? Most of the people think that what happens “afterwards” isn’t so important. But unfortunately they are completely wrong. Mainly during the first minutes after wild, intimate and unrestrained sex the apparently nice time together can change immediately. Whether smoking a cigarette, or eating something or just falling asleep, each one has their own typical ritual after having sex. However, the worst thing that your partner can ever ask you seriously: “So darling, how was I?”

after-sex

Let’s start with some general advices for both genders. A good communication is quite right, but starting a kind of analyse of the “sexual intercourse” talking about specific details isn’t very entertaining. After all it isn’t a casting show where you will be evaluated at the end of the show. Nowadays, it’s very normal to hear that women think too much. But both partners should avoid comparing the present partner with exciting affairs in the past, one-night stands or ex lovers. Even if you think of it only secretly, you should pay attention, because we all know that facial expressions speak volumes. As well as loutish behaviour like belching or farting are absolutely prohibited. The shower can also wait half an hour, because what counts now is cuddling with your partner: hugs, kisses, sweet caresses.. That’s why foreplay AND after play exist.

And now, let’s talk about women. It’s normal that the female gender is more sensible and sensitive, but my dear ladies, you shouldn’t take it so seriously if men fall asleep too fast. The biological clock of men and women ticks in a completely different way. While HE thinks of practical things like “eating, drinking, sleeping” which is comprehensible due to the higher need for rest men require, SHE thinks more of cuddling a little bit, sweet kisses, and another one, philosophizing about god and the world. Well, that’s just not so compatible, honestly speaking. So, please, be patient. Hence a man experience a climax, a high number of the hormone oxytocin will be transmitted which explains the fast feeling of relaxation and tiredness.

And what about you my dear gentlemen? Well, we do know that it’s normal that you get tired so fast. But women as well realize exhaustive exercises, but they don’t fall asleep within seconds. So come on, make a greater effort, because if not, trouble in paradise may occur, while she thinks “Well, fantastic! He only needs me for sex…” So adapt yourself, because cuddling a little bit isn’t so difficult.

If both partners make a greater effort, the after play can be as nice and passionate as the foreplay. By the way, the famous “cigarette afterwards” has completely went out. Surprise your partner with a wonderful trip to one of the most enchanting Spanish cities. Rent the comfortable and economic apartments in Seville and enjoy some intimate hours with your partner. And don’t fall asleep so fast, do you hear me?

Do men get hitched for a second time more than women?

Posted by seville | seville | Wednesday 10 February 2010 12:14 pm

We know that in this century couples do not get married as much as before: now we prefer to live alone or it’s simply harder for us to fall in love. But men are more prone than women to get married after a divorce. Is it because they are unable to endure the loneliness and they need a motherly figure?

man-getting-married

It’s hard to imagine it, but it’s the awful truth, men don’t have as much difficulty as women to compromise to a second marriage. A Spanish study reveal that 22% of men become engaged a second time without any hassle. The Sociologists declare that women are usually alone after the divorce because they are usually the ones with the children’s custody. On the other hand, men are usually the ones who leave the nest and refugee in a bachelor pad. Having more free time to dedicate to a new love they have it easier to have a new family, because the biology allows them to have children later. Brad Pitt would be the ideal example, after his break-up with Angelina, he went with his mommy!

Generalizing is never good but sometimes men can be so dependent! men who prefer the solitude, who can cook, do the laundry, clean the house etc. is hard to find but not impossible. Men like this are a real jewel!

Did you know that the Spanish lovers are the ones who have the best reputation? If you’re single, a tour through Seville will leave you amazed with all its beauty and wonder. And if you want to take a trip alone with your partner, the exotic and hot air of the Andalusian capital will drive both love crazy. For an enjoyable stay rent Apartments in Seville.

Women Astronomers

Posted by seville | seville | Friday 5 February 2010 12:59 pm

Astronomy is a very old science and mankind from his beginning, has always showed an interest in the stars. Long before the invention of the GPS, the stars have guided us. With all the technology we have at our disposal, some people still look to the stars to find north.

Whether we read old encyclopaedias or the modern online ones, we’ll see that there is scarcely a mention of the notable role that women have played in the development of astronomy. We all know names like Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo and Newton and it may seem that women were not interested in it, but it’s quite the opposite: in the fourth century Hypatia of Alexandria, (the main character of the film Agora), contributed to the development of this science, as well as writing texts on geometry and algebra. She also improved the ancient astrolabes. The astrolabe was an instrument that was used to determine where the stars are positioned.

Throughout the course of history many women got involved in the world of astronomy while collaborating with their husbands or relatives. In Germany, for example, this practice was very common in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. An important figure of the German astronomy at that time was Maria Cunitz (1610-1664) who through her work Propicia Urania, tried to bring the astronomy of Kepler closer to the youth. In the eighteenth century it is important to mention Caroline Herschel, a German astronomer, who discovered and catalogued eight comets and three nebulae. Herschel, along with another astronomer called Mary Somerville (1782-1872), was the first woman to enter the Royal Astronomical Society in 1835.

There is also a list of many other prominent figures such as: Henrietta S. Leavitt (1868-1921), Willimina Fleming (1857-1911), Mariel Mitchel (1818-1889), Cecilia Helena Payne (1900-1979), Margaret Burbidge (1919-),Vera Rubin (1928-). One of the characters of modern astronomy is undoubtedly the Scot Jocelyn Bell Burnell (1943), who studied at Cambridge University and between 2001 and 2004 was president of the Royal Astronomical Society. Other noted work is from the Italian astronomer Margherita Hack.

If you love astronomy and you would like to expand your knowledge, you have until March 14th to combine a pleasant trip with a visit to a unique exhibition: “Con A de Astrónomas”, that will be held at La Casa de la Ciencia de Sevilla and where you can immerse yourself in the female world of astronomy. Forget about the expensive hotels and rent Apartments in Seville and enjoy this beautiful city to the fullest.
